Frequently Asked Questions

How often is school data updated?
General school information and Ofsted ratings are updated weekly from official sources. Academic performance data is updated annually following the publication of exam results, typically in October/November.
Do you cover independent schools?
Yes. Our database includes all independent schools registered with the Department for Education. Independent schools are inspected by either Ofsted or the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI), and we include ratings from both.
How are quality scores calculated?
Quality scores combine Ofsted ratings with distance-based weighting. Outstanding schools receive 4 points, Good receives 3, Requires Improvement receives 2, and Inadequate receives 1. These scores are weighted by distance using a non-linear decay function based on academic research showing school impact diminishes beyond 3.6km.
What Ofsted judgement categories do you include?
We include all five current judgement categories: Overall Effectiveness, Quality of Education, Behaviour and Attitudes, Personal Development, and Leadership and Management. For historical inspections, we also include legacy categories.
Do you have school catchment boundaries?
Not currently. Catchment boundaries are managed by individual local authorities with inconsistent data formats. This is on our roadmap as a high-priority enhancement. Currently, we provide distance-based analysis as an alternative.
What is the difference between URN and UPRN?
URN (Unique Reference Number) is the official identifier for schools assigned by the Department for Education. UPRN (Unique Property Reference Number) is the identifier for addresses in our Property Index. We link schools to UPRNs to enable property-school proximity analysis.
How does school data affect property valuations?
Research demonstrates school quality explains 3-4% of property value variance. Properties in Outstanding school catchments command 8-12% premiums. The effect is strongest for secondary schools and diminishes non-linearly with distance up to approximately 3.6km.
